Why visit Orense?

Because Orense, besides being the third most populated city in Galicia, has an extraordinary heritage. It was founded by the Romans, who probably named it Auriense, a term that refers to the amount of gold that the area possessed. The bridge over the Miño river dates from this period, which was rebuilt in the 12th century, giving it its current appearance.

It is also important to visit its numerous religious buildings, such as the Cathedral of San Martin, the Church of San Francisco, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Sanctuaries of Our Lady of the Hermitages and Our Lady of Miracles. The city also has the Castelo Ramiro, the Liceo de Orense and the Museo Arqueolóxico de Orense.

The capital is known for its thermal waters, which you can enjoy in Las Burgas, the Pozas de A Chavasqueira, the Manantial do Tinteiro, the Burga do Muíño and the Burgas de Outariz.

The province of Orense is the only one without coast of the Galician community, so its gastronomy is based more on meats, wines and desserts. Do not leave the city without tasting a Galician stew, androlla or almendrados de Allariz. Accompany all this with a good wine. Remember that Orense has four Designations of Origin: Ribeiro, Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra and Monterrei.

Get to know the province of Orense

In addition to visiting Ourense, you can drive your rental van to visit the fantastic municipalities of Orense:

Only 22 kilometers away you will find Allariz, a small town of less than 6,000 inhabitants. To get here, you will have to drive your Furauto vehicle on the N-525 or the A-52 southbound for less than 25 minutes. The town, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Site, still preserves the Church of Santiago, A Paneira, the House-Tower of Castro Ojea, the Palace of the Court, the Jewish Quarter and the remains of its Wall.

Almost 80 kilometers, about an hour and twenty, separate Ourense from Laza, a municipality in the region of Verín. Although it is a town famous for its carnival, considered the oldest in Galicia, here you can also visit the Church of San Juan Bautista de Laza, the Chapel of Santa Catalina de Souteliño and its traditional houses and mills.

O Carballiño

In just over 20 minutes you can get from Orense to O Carballiño driving your rental van along the A-52, AG-53 and AG-54 for 28 kilometers. Once here, don't forget to visit the Church of Vera Cruz, an unfinished work by Antonio Palacios, the castreño site of San Cibrán de Las, the Pazo de los Quiroga and Santa Baia de Banga. Although it has a beautiful heritage, tourists travel to O Carballiño to enjoy its incredible thermal waters.

You will have to drive your rental van for 24 minutes along the A-52 if you want to get from A Coruña to Ribadavia, a municipality in the Ribeiro region. In addition to an extraordinary wine, in this town you will find the most important Jewish quarter in Galicia. You can also visit the Castle of Ribadavia, the pre-Romanesque Chapel of San Xes de Francelos and the Sierra del Suído.
