Get to know Bilbao with your rental car

Welcome to Bilbao, the capital of Biscay. This is a city that can provide all the dose of culture, fun and entertainment you could wish for in a visit to a large European city. With some 345,000 inhabitants it is the most populated city in the province.

Throughout history, Bilbao has been a very appreciated city. This, above all, was due to the privileges granted by the Crown of Castile that allowed the construction and development of a port system of reference based on the wool trade.

Nowadays, this city is the most important enclave of the Cantabrian coast. An example of this is that it was chosen to house one of the most prestigious modern art centers in the world, the Guggenheim Museum.

And if all this were not reason enough to visit this beautiful city in the Basque Country, in 2010 it won the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, considered the Nobel Prize for Urbanism.

Using Furauto's car rental service in Bilbao you will be able to move freely around the city and its surroundings. And best of all, you will be able to reserve your vehicle in a few minutes at a very competitive price.

How to get to Bilbao

Sea lovers can reach Bilbao by ferry or cruise ship. Although the capital of Biscay has no sea, there are two ports very close by. The port of Santurtzi is just 20 kilometers away and twice a week it operates trips to Portsmouth, in the United Kingdom. The port of Getxo, about 10 kilometers away, receives cruise ships from all over the world.

For those who prefer the air, Bilbao International Airport, located 12 kilometers from the city center, is the most important airport in the north of the peninsula and operates flights to the main Spanish cities and abroad.

The train station, located next to the Nervion Estuary, makes daily trips to Madrid and Barcelona. It also provides connections to Logroño, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Salamanca, Málaga, A Coruña, Vigo, Burgos, León and Segovia.

The Termibus bus station is located in the heart of Bilbao, very close to the San Mamés stadium. Regional, national and international trips depart from here (http://www.termibus.es/).

If you prefer to take advantage of your rental car, here are the main access routes:

  • A-8. Autovía del Cantábrico: It runs along the coast from Baamonde (Lugo) to Bilbao, where it connects with the AP-8.
  • N-634: Joins San Sebastian with Santiago de Compostela and enters the center of Bilbao from the south.
  • N-240. Tarragona-Bilbao: Before entering the capital of Biscay, it passes through Valls, Montblanch, Lérida, Almacellas, Binéfar, Monzón, Barbastro, Huesca, Sabiñánigo, Jaca and Vitoria.

Tolls to take into account in Bilbao

To enter or leave Bilbao, you will find two toll roads.

  • AP-8. Cantabrian Highway. Irún-Bilbao: allows you to enter Bilbao from the northwest and southwest.
  • AP-68. Ebro Highway: links with the A-8 and the AP-8 in the south of Bilbao. It is the best way to travel to Barcelona or Burgos, from where it links with Madrid, Valladolid or Portugal.

Parking your rental car in Bilbao

The city of Bilbao has regulated parking areas. To park in them, you will have to pay the corresponding fee. You should also know that you cannot leave your vehicle for more than 2 hours in the blue zone and 5 hours in the green zone. Check the rates and schedules in the following link.

To save you problems and time, from Furauto we recommend you to park your vehicle in paid parking lots. They are distributed throughout the city. Below we show you their locations on a map.

If you want to park for free, it is best to look in the suburbs, such as in the neighborhood of San Ignazio, or in neighboring municipalities.
